Pieter Smeets on the e-cargo bike

"It saves you parking costs, I can ride all the way to the customer's door, and it's faster too"

Pieter Smeets from Pieter Smeets Schilderwerken talks about his experiences with the e-cargo bike

‘I regularly saw other businesses use the e-cargo bike and decided I wanted to give it a try for my business as well.’ Pieter Smeets from Pieter Smeets Schilderwerken tried out the electric cargo-bike offered by Maastricht Bereikbaar for two weeks. ‘When cycling with a heavy load, you have to be careful when going over speed bumps and sometimes you need to brake quite hard. But the bicycle is really convenient for smaller jobs in the city centre, as it saves you parking costs, I can ride all the way to the customer's door, and it's faster too.’

From the van to the e-bike

‘Our business employs six painters and we have four vans. But I enjoy cycling, so using the e-cargo bike instead was no problem. We could never use a normal bicycle because we have to transport a lot of materials, but I could take smaller things on the e-bike. I just needed the van to transport bigger items such as ladders and large, heavy buckets of paint. In these two weeks I was able to use the bicycle six times.’ 

Easy and faster

An e-cargo bike is a great mode of transport for businesses that don't need to transport bulky materials. Unfortunately it wasn't the most suitable solution for our industry, but I'd definitely recommend that you try it! The e-bike is easy to use and is always the fastest way to travel through the city centre.’

Eco-friendly business practices

Pieter won't be buying an e-cargo bike for his business. ‘I just find it too expensive for the few moments that we can make practical use of it. But we do want to work in a more environmentally friendly way and will be buying an electric van. We also use bio-based paint products and separate the paint from the water when we clean our brushes. We then leave the paint to dry and separate it into the residual waste so that environmentally unfriendly substances are not drained into the sewer system.’
