About Zuid-Limburg Bereikbaar

Our professionals connect partners and assist employers and entrepreneurs on their way to sustainable mobility. We often do this free of charge and in a concrete manner by creating and, if desired, implementing an action plan. We support employers in both the public and private sectors in making personal mobility more sustainable. We provide advice to entrepreneurs on making their logistical processes more sustainable while maintaining a profitable business model. Partners for us include governments, mobility providers, employers, entrepreneurs, (national) interest organizations, educational institutions, and knowledge institutes.

Working together on smart, safe and sustainable mobility

We are committed to changing behavior: less in the car, more on the bike or in public transport, more shared mobility and more effective, environmentally friendly car use in combination with P+R. All our actions are aimed at a healthy living and working environment.

The program office was established in 2010 to ensure less car mobility, especially among commuters. Large infrastructure projects, such as the new traffic system with a two-layer tunnel for A2 Maastricht and a new route for the Noorderbrug, were the reason. Meanwhile, the implementation program focuses not only on accessibility and traffic flow, but also on sustainable mobility.

Further development

Between 2012 and 2017, the Maastricht Bereikbaar program participated in the national program Beter Benutten (Better Utilization). From 2012 to 2014, this program was focused on the city of Maastricht. From 2015 to 2017, it was scaled up to a South Limburg level through the so-called employer approach. Currently, we are working on both accessibility and sustainable mobility in the region. We have been operating under the new name Zuid-Limburg Bereikbaar since late 2019.

In 2022, the collaboration with the 16 municipalities of South Limburg was strengthened. Municipalities and the Province of Limburg are working together as comprehensively as possible to promote smart, safe, and sustainable mobility as a region. Through yearly plans, they enable Zuid-Limburg Bereikbaar to make a tangible contribution to the spatial, economic, societal, and ecological challenges of the region from a mobility perspective.

Collaborating governments

How is the collaboration structured?

  • Program Office Zuid-Limburg Accessible is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Province of Limburg, and the sixteen municipalities of South Limburg. All these governmental bodies contribute to the funding of the 2023 implementation program.

  • The South Limburg Bereikbaar steering committee reflects the public-private partnership and consists of representatives of employers, mobility service providers and governments. Chairman of the South Limburg Bereikbaar steering committee is alderman Gert John Aarts. John Aarts is a member of the Maastricht College and his portfolio includes Mobility, Urban Management, Sustainability and Hospitality.
