On disruption and accessibility
An accessible region with smooth traffic flow.
Working together with partners, Zuid-Limburg Bereikbaar is addressing the reduction of disruptions caused by construction work or visitor flows within a region or on peak days.
Zuid-Limburg Bereikbaar works together with road authorities for national, provincial, and municipal roads, contractors, and other stakeholders to reduce disruptions caused by road works and peak visitor days.
This approach is relevant to South Limburg because of the influence of significant construction activity and road works in the south of the Netherlands (including Brabant) on accessibility in South Limburg. As an example, bringing forward the widening of the A2 motorway between Het Vonderen junction and Kerensheide is a major point of attention for the region.
We also provide information on specific road works and works on railways, as well as how they influence one another. To do this, we work in close collaboration with the Department of Waterways and Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat), the Municipality of Maastricht, and the Province of Limburg. We identify potential negative impacts in advance, meaning that we can act in time to inform you. When considering the regional scale, we focus on accessibility during peak visitor days.
In this way, disruptions and peak visitor days are used as a way to encourage structural or incidental behavioural change among transport users.
Collaborating on major construction projects
During (major) construction projects, we work hand in hand with partners such as Rijkswaterstaat. We do this not only to provide road users with the best possible information about the impact of traffic disruptions but also because major construction projects need to be 'smartly planned' and coordinated with other road authorities.
In the Dutch video from SmartwayZ.NL, Paul Hanraets from Rijkswaterstaat discusses this. Rob Schaap from Zuid-Limburg Bereikbaar talks about the collaboration with employers and offering travel alternatives. With this, we aim to entice travelers to make a different choice and leave their cars behind. This way, construction work becomes an opportunity to change existing travel behavior.
